With Hearts of Flame (Deluxe Limited Edition): A Dark Academia Romantasy Novel of Vampires and Dragons Featuring Stenciled Edges and Illustrated Endpapers (Bloodwing Academy, 4)
Briar Boleyn
by Laurell K. Hamilton
When a string of gruesome, ritualistic murders terrorizes the Pacific Northwest, local law enforcement is out of their depth. They call in the heavy hitters: U.S. Marshals Anita Blake and Edward. As experts in the supernatural, they know these aren't ordinary crimes, but the work of something far more sinister. This installment marks a return to the series' roots, prioritizing gritty detective work and high-stakes tension over the sprawling interpersonal drama of later entries.
This paranormal romance blends urban fantasy with dark thriller elements, featuring the classic tropes of monster hunters, dangerous shifters, and an underlying mystery that keeps the pages turning. Anita and Edward are back in their element, tracking a killer who seems to be baiting them into a lethal trap. The shadows are closing in as the legendary Harlequin—the terrifying enforcers of the vampire world—emerge to hunt their own kind, leaving Anita caught in a deadly crossfire.
For fans who miss the relentless pace and investigative focus of the early novels, this story delivers a satisfyingly sharp narrative. It is an intense, pulse-pounding read that tests the limits of Anita’s lethal skills. If you crave a dark, adrenaline-fueled adventure, this is the perfect addition to your supernatural bookshelf.

Alright...so the book starts out quick and to the point. No drama with Anita leaving, no extra emotional oh poor me, and I'm holier than thou act. No it starts with her and Edward at the crime scene, they both know whats doing it but they can't tell the police so they have to work alone...as always and just how i like it. I didn't like how Skin Trade ended with the sex tactic, but I enjoyed how this one did. I mean everyone said that it was anticlimactic, but you know what I loved the ending! I...

Another book of Laurel K. Hamilton's that I just love. Not for children or other naive people. That's the one thing about being older. You reread all these books again. You remember the circumstances but you don't remember the exact ending. 😂 )

What I liked about this book is that it felt so reminiscent to LKH in Guilty Pleasures. Early on there were less sex scenes, more internal conflict, and a lot of kick ass detective work (not that, that has disappeared I don't mind the tangential direction it took). Hit List reads like somewhere in the middle of the spectrum of the Anita Blake series not too raunchy (I'm not complaining about that either) or too prudish from where Anita first began. LKH gave us some hot steamy pages to turn but...

I read a number of the negative reviews and the negative comments of those who want to hate thIs series posted on the other positive reviews and I don't get it. This books was good. If you read to enjoy the escape into a different world for a while, and you like to keep up with the characters it succeeds very well as entertainment. I'm posting primarily because all the negative reviews almost convinced me not to read this novel, which would have been my loss. If you read to be entertained and...

Anita's latest case has her dancing with danger, where her healing powers come with a twist more complicated than a pretzel at a yoga retreat. Will she crack the case and catch the culprits, or will her supernatural gift turn into a cosmic practical joke? )
