Beneath the shimmering, sun-drenched sprawl of Los Angeles, a primal war is brewing. Far from the polished glitz of Hollywood, an ancient race of lycanthropes survives in the shadows, recruiting the city’s forgotten souls into a brutal, shifting pack. This is not your typical urban fantasy; it is a visceral, free-verse masterpiece that reimagines shifter lore with the grit of a noir thriller and the dark humor of a graphic novel.
At the heart of the chaos is Anthony, a gentle dogcatcher who finds himself hopelessly entangled with a woman hiding a lethal secret. As she attempts to break free from the violent constraints of her pack, the couple is pulled into a dangerous struggle for autonomy. Theirs is a beautifully brutal romance, set against a backdrop of meth labs, surfing, and the relentless pulse of the city.
Toby Barlow crafts a compelling narrative that leans heavily into the found-family trope, exploring the complex dynamics of pack loyalty and the search for belonging. It is an ambitious, stylistic tour de force that strips away the fluff of traditional paranormal romance to expose the raw nerves of identity, love, and death. If you crave a story with teeth, this is your next obsession.

I actually read this book a couple of years ago during its initial release but only recently purchased it for my girlfriend (who is enjoying her time with it as I write this). Sharp Teeth is a beautifully dark narrative on werewolves, gang warfare, politics and love. Written in a format akin to The Iliad or even Dante's Inferno, Sharp Teeth explores the relationship between a dog catcher and the woman he falls for--who also happens to be a werewolf--and not in the Hollywood, Twilight, or even...

A good read, especially for the summer. The author's choice of free verse works well for two reasons. First, the style requires an economy which helps to avoid extraneous exposition and move the narrative along at a quick pace. Second, the style seems to serve as an actual narrative vehicle since the book's frenetic pace and plot complexities are a good match for the subject matter at hand. All-in-all, a good choice for a first time writer since it allows the story to be told without diverting...

Los Angeles has always disturbed me. All that sunshine. Those über-toned bodies. Packs of werewolves roaming the canyons and arroyos. It's enough to make any catlover nervous. In this awesome, exuberant, first book Toby Barlow strips away the city's thin veneer of civilization and lays bare its raw, violent, lycanthropic underbelly. It's the cross-species love story between dogcatcher Anthony and his damaged werewolf lover, which unfolds against a backdrop of drugs, murder, revenge, and the...

I read Sharp Teeth as a preview for my 11 year old son. He is an advanced reader, so at this age, there is a bit of a challenge in finding age appropriate materials that he a.) hasn't already read and b.) keeps him interested and c.) doesn't veer into \"too much.\" Sharp Teeth falls into the category of \"too much.\" It's written in beautifully taut prose, but the subject matter is too high level for a fifth grader. Too many dogs humping, too much exposure to the raw elements of life that I, as...

I purchased \"Sharp Teeth\" based on a few reviews I read. I sat down to read it and could not put it down, I ended up reading it in three sittings all in one day (and missing some sleep!). That was how well this book drew me in. Sharp Teeth is a kind of urban fantasy, set in modern day Los Angeles. It delves into an interesting werewolf mythology where the lycanthropes change solely into dogs/wolves and they don't need a full moon to do it. Some of the characters are just so achingly...
