The House at Watch Hill: A Novel

by Karen Marie Moning

About this book

Grieving and destitute, twenty-four-year-old Zo Grey is desperate for a fresh start. When a mysterious inheritance calls her to the eerie town of Divinity, Louisiana, she accepts an impossible condition: reside alone in a decaying Gothic mansion atop Watch Hill for three years to claim a life-changing fortune. What begins as a quest for financial security quickly spirals into a dark, atmospheric descent into the unknown.

This gripping urban fantasy launches a spellbinding trilogy, blending rich world-building with the high-stakes tension of a dark-romance. As Zo navigates the mansion’s impossible architecture and locked turrets, she finds herself drawn to a dangerously seductive Scottish groundskeeper whose presence is as mysterious as the red-eyed owls watching from the shadows. The house is not merely a residence; it is a cage of secrets that holds the key to her own forgotten heritage.

For readers craving a paranormal academy-style mystery, this story delivers a slow-burn intensity where dormant powers awaken and ancient threats stir. If you are looking for your next obsession, step into the shadows of Watch Hill. Here, the line between destiny and damnation is razor-thin, and the truth about Zo’s bloodline is far deadlier than she ever imagined.

The House at Watch Hill is book 1 in Karen Marie Moning’s new trilogy. It follows Zo Grey, a twenty-four year old woman who has done her best with the life she has been dealt. She works numerous jobs as her mom battles cancer. When tragedy strikes, and her mom passes suddenly, she is at a loss. With nobody to stay for and no home to speak of, Zo travels to Divinity,...

The House at Watch Hill

KMM is one of my all-time favorite authors, so I go into this review with a little bit of bias. This book is different from the author’s previous works mostly in tone and writing style. Though she has a very feisty FMC and some attractive Irish and Scottish men around her, the overall style is different. The almost formal style of the book, whereas previous works were full of flare, and sarcasm, and less like I need a dictionary to read the story. KMM has been through a lot personally over the...

Witchy Good

Before social media help make readers obsessed with certain authors and their books, all we readers had was word of mouth, or to be inspired by a book cover and buy the book. The later is how I was first introduced to the writing of Karen Marie Moning, plus we share a first and middle name, which I kind of found cool buying the first Fever series book. Moning’s writing has always been a thinking readers style, and it is very evident in her latest book The House on Watch Hill. The House on Watch...

So exciting!

I haven't read a new Karen Marie Moning book for such a long time! Her Fever series is one of my all time favorites! I'm so excited and happy to have a new series by her! This took is so good! It's one of those books you don't want to put down. You need to know what happens next, and a lot happens. The story is about Zo. Her life is an extreme case of sadness, pain and poverty. Suddenly, she's contacted about a life changing inheritance. All she has to do is live in a creepy house for three...

Doesn't go anywhere, is like an intro novella

May 30, 2025

I would love to have given this a 5 because when I started it it felt like one. I was so excited to be starting a really good book . But it just didn't go anywhere, especially with the Kindle price. It was more like an introduction or novella. I like the characters and setting and premise, but it just was getting started when it stopped. One of the things I've always liked about Ms moning's books is that even when a series, each book feels full and has a certain conclusion. Not just an intro...
