by Paulette Kennedy
South Carolina, 1853. Lillian Carmichael is hours away from the gallows, condemned for the murder of her own sister. But when a catatonic state leads the town to declare her dead, she is entombed in the family mausoleum. Awakening to the suffocating darkness of her own grave, Lillian claws her way back into a world that wants her dead, fleeing to the treacherous Lowcountry marshes to reinvent herself.
This haunting Southern Gothic tale masterfully blends history with the supernatural as a string of gruesome, bloodless murders terrorizes Charleston. Whispers spread that Lillian has returned as a creature of the night, a vampire seeking vengeance. Caught between the law and a monstrous reality, she finds an unexpected ally in Kate O’Malley, an actress and mistress of disguise. Together, they navigate a dangerous game of shifting identities and survival.
For readers who crave a dark, atmospheric paranormal romance, this story is a must-read. It weaves a second-chance narrative through a web of family secrets and gothic suspense, proving that the most terrifying monsters are often those closest to home. As the manhunt intensifies, Lillian must confront the real killer and the blood-soaked truth of her own lineage to finally claim her freedom.

The first chapter of this book reached out and grabbed me by the throat. What could be more compelling than a young woman in jail, hours away from being executed for murdering her sister--a crime she did not commit? What excites me just as much is the Southern Gothic atmosphere. You will smell the same smells as Lillian, hear the same things, and feel the same fear and grief. Kennedy is highly skilled at immersing a reader in the time and place of the novel, in this case, South Carolina, 1853....

I do love stories with a gothic vibe, and there is just something about Paulette Kennedy's writing that is extremely atmospheric. The premise of her newest story The Two Deaths Of Lillian Carmichael sounded absolutely fascinating, and I loved the sound of that 1853 South Carolina setting as well. I've been looking forward to pick it up, and I what I can say is that it definitely satisfied my southern gothic craving! Dark, atmospheric and beautifully written; this book has only put this author...

The graphic lesbian sex scenes practically in the middle of the book really made me mad because it was a good book up until then & I had to skip over so much filth that it kind of ruined the rest of the book for me. WHY did you have to put those parts in there?😡 )

Another winning novel by Paulette Kennedy! The Two Deaths of Lillian Carmichael was beautifully written with lush prose that fully immerses the reader in the gothic setting. I was hooked immediately by Lillian's story, and her journey kept me turning pages, as did the mystery surrounding the killer's identity. This was the perfect mix of swoons and twists, and another 5-star read from a phenomenal author! ) One person found this helpful
