The Vampyre and Carmilla (Penguin Speculative Fiction Special)

by John Polidori

About this book

Before Dracula cast his long shadow over literature, two foundational works defined the vampire genre, forever altering our fascination with the undead. This elegant Penguin Speculative Fiction volume brings together John Polidori’s The Vampyre and Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, offering readers a haunting glimpse into the origins of the aristocratic predator. With a foreword by V. E. Schwab, this collection is an essential addition for anyone seeking the dark, historical roots of modern urban fantasy.

In The Vampyre, Lord Ruthven emerges as the ultimate prototype for the dangerous, charismatic nobleman. His predatory nature amidst high society sets a chilling standard for the genre, blending historical elegance with pure, cold-blooded malice. It is a masterclass in atmospheric tension that remains as unsettling today as it was in 1819.

The collection culminates in the gothic masterpiece Carmilla, a story that masterfully weaves together themes of isolation and desire. Set within the walls of a remote, castle-like estate, the narrative follows a young woman whose life is upended by a mysterious, seductive visitor. For fans of paranormal romance, this novella is indispensable. It captures the eerie, forbidden intensity that has influenced generations of supernatural storytelling, proving that the most lingering hauntings are those that feel like love.

The paper in this book is really high quality, and the font style/size is also pretty nice. The binding is excellent, and it's always good to see hardcovers with the artwork printed directly on the boards (no need for a dust jacket here). The endpapers are absolutely gorgeous, and feature red...
