Disco Witches of Fire Island: A Novel

by Blair Fell

About this book

It is 1989 on Fire Island, a hedonistic paradise where the neon lights of the disco floor flicker against the shadow of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Joe Agabian arrives at the Pines hoping to outrun his grief, but he soon stumbles into a world far more dangerous and enchanting than the local party scene. When he discovers his eccentric house cleaners are actually members of a secret coven of disco witches, Joe is pulled into a fight to save his community from forces both human and supernatural.

This gripping urban fantasy blends historical poignancy with the addictive spark of a paranormal romance. As the coven struggles to maintain their waning protective wards, Joe finds himself in a slow-burn romance with a mysterious, captivating ferryman hiding his own aquatic secrets. Their chemistry is electric, marked by the tension of a classic loathe-at-first-sight dynamic that gradually gives way to a profound, life-altering connection.

At its core, this is a story of found-family and the resilience of the human spirit. It serves as both a vibrant tribute to queer history and a spellbinding escape. If you are looking for a story where alpha-hero intensity meets coven-life magic, this magnetic masterpiece will keep you turning pages until dawn.

A Magnetic Masterpiece.

August 10, 2025

This is one of the best novels I have ever read. It is thoroughly enjoyable to read while also feeling like quality literature with its setting, characters, issues, and premise. The characters are so enjoyable and I wish I had a Howie and Lenny of my own. The magic system is the most grounded magic system I’ve ever read in a book even with the inclusion of disco and the climax of the book is absolutely beautiful. The monster while a supernatural entity feels real and is perfect for a novel with...

A Strong Addition to Fire Island Stories

January 28, 2026

At the heart of this book is a journey to Fire Island in years past. I am proud that this book will keep memories of a time and place in gay culture alive. It really expresses the fear and worry of the time, but also the spaces we could be our joyful selves as well. For me, the 5-star parts of this book were the bar scenes. So much fun to read. I struggled with the characters keeping bits guarded from one another & some conversations felt lengthy along the book's path. My gut says if we could...

A perfect window into the past lives of Fire Island Pines

May 11, 2025

This book is well-written, fun, and needs to be taken quite un-seriously. You will keep reading until your Kindle hits you in the nose because you are too tired to see. The plot is fictional, but the period is historic. I went to Fire Island with my partner and two friends for the Invasion in 1988, a year before the book is set, and almost everything that happens to Joe, the hero, happened to one of the 4 of us that weekend. The book describes the characters (good and evil) and the period...
