Petra Grady has accepted her place on the fringes of the magical elite. As a sweeper at the prestigious mages’ university, she spends her days cleaning up the dangerous, volatile dross left behind by talented spellcasters. She is invisible to those she cleans up after, especially the brilliant and frustratingly handsome Benedict Strom. But when a high-stakes research project goes disastrously wrong, Petra’s overlooked expertise becomes the only thing standing between them and total catastrophe.
This gripping urban fantasy launches a fresh, imaginative series that breathes new life into the academy trope. Forced into an uneasy alliance, Petra and Benedict must flee the very institution that once dictated their lives. Their journey is a tense, second-chance adventure that bridges the gap between those who wield power and those who manage the fallout. As they track down a disgraced outcast, Petra begins to realize that her supposed lack of talent might actually be a dormant, world-altering ability.
Perfect for fans of paranormal romance, the story masterfully balances complex worldbuilding with high-stakes suspense. It is a compelling tale of hidden potential and forbidden secrets that will keep you guessing until the final page. Dive into this electrifying start to a series where luck is the deadliest magic of all.

Reread Update: I still love this book! The magical worldbuilding is a lot, but hang in there because it's a great story. Petra is a sweeper, cleaning up mages' magical waste. Every time a mage does magic, they create dross, which causes bad luck and leads to accidents. She doesn't love her place in society because mages look down on sweepers since they can't actually do magic, but she is content with her life. Her job is essential because magic needs balance. Until Benedict, a sort of childhood...

3.5 rounded up. Took a long time to set up the world, but it’s interesting and unique, if a tad awkward at times. Also took a while to fluff out the characters, but the momentum picks up well, I like the MC and her Pluck, and I expect the next one to be amazing. ) One person found this helpful

Kim Harrison’s writing is at top form in this new series. There was a lot of information that had to be introduced in the first 50 or so pages, but it was done well and organically. There weren’t any huge surprises or plot twists that couldn’t be figured out, but I don’t think they were designed to be big aha moments and the storyline remained interesting and engaging and the action fast-paced. Thoroughly enjoyable first book with a satisfying ending and a great set up for future books in the...

Three Kinds of Lucky (The Shadow Age #1) by Kim Harrison Imagine my delight when I realized I had not read this series yet—what a gift! I absolutely loved this book. The characters are fantastic and instantly engaging. Lev, a Mikitka who may or may not qualify as a hero but definitely seems to be a good guy; Benedict, her nerdy high-school crush turned mage scientist; and Grady, the crusty old man who helps her discover her weaver abilities and has quietly watched over her since her father’s...

To be fair, I received this copy at no charge from the author. There were no strings attached as in no expectation or required review to get this copy. I wanted to review it. Its that good, honestly. Those who know my reviews know, I don't BS them. This is an entirely new world, A new series (no tomatoes were known to cause any deaths here.). Seriously, there is a clear dichotomy between the mundane population and mages - those who can wield magic. There is a lot of current physics in this...
