Estella Flores Midnight is at rock bottom, unemployed and adrift, when a long-lost grandmother emerges with a life-changing invitation. Seeking a fresh start, she travels to the atmospheric riverside village of Ames Crossing, Illinois, to join the sisters she never knew she had. But this is no ordinary family reunion. The Midnights are keepers of ancient wise woman traditions, and Estella quickly realizes that stepping into their world means embracing a legacy of secrets buried deep within the town’s history.
The paranormal genre shines here, blending cozy mystery with a haunting, slow-burn romance. When Estella meets the enigmatic Chauncey Marquette, a man who mirrors his 1840s ancestor, she becomes trapped in a cycle of waking visions and vivid déjà vu. As the lines between her own life and the tragic memories of star-crossed lovers begin to blur, Estella must confront the fact that the past is not staying buried.

I read so many paranormal/cozy mystery books and have to say that when I start one of Ellen Dugan’s books I enjoy the quality of the writing. It’s obvious she thoroughly proofreads and researches her books. She is a master weaver of words. I tore through Midnight Star, savoring every word, until I crashed into the end of the book. - “No! What?! No! It can’t be the end of the book! – is the feeling in my heart. I read the beginning of Midnight Secrets last night and can't wait to read more. )

This was an enjoyable read. I liked the introduction of someone from outside their smallish town, not just into town but into the Midnight family. The ending was a bit sudden and left me wanting to know what happened next, but the major plot points of this book were wrapped up. It’ll be interesting to see where this series goes now as this book was clearly a turning point that widened its scope beyond a few known characters. ) One person found this helpful

Estella is the newest member of the Midnight family. She is strong but with areas with which she struggles. If I didn't have to get up for work, I would have read it in one sitting. How she grows over the course of the book is engrossing. How she is integrated into the family is heartwarming. I loved it! ) One person found this helpful
